How Burna Boy Is Bringing African Music Into the World of GTA VI.

African music enters Vice City

One of the world's most anticipated video games is preparing to give African music a prominent place on its fictional airwaves. Rockstar Games has announced that Nigerian superstar Burna Boy and British electronic musician Palms Trax will be featured on Afro Bank FM, one of the radio stations in Grand Theft Auto VI. The game is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026.

The station will feature a mix of Amapiano, African classics and other contemporary African sounds. Its inclusion places African music within the fictional state of Leonida, the setting of the latest Grand Theft Auto instalment. For players, the soundtrack is part of everyday gameplay, accompanying journeys through the game's streets, neighbourhoods and highways.

A different kind of global stage

Music has always been central to Grand Theft Auto's identity. Its fictional radio stations introduce players to songs, genres and artists while creating the atmosphere of the worlds they explore. They also shape how those worlds are remembered.

For African music, this creates a different form of exposure from concerts, streaming platforms or traditional radio. Songs become part of an interactive experience in which players choose where to go and how long to listen.

The inclusion of Burna Boy comes after years of growing international recognition for Afrobeats and other African genres. Nigerian artists have moved from regional success to major international venues, collaborations and awards.

The cultural reach of video games

Grand Theft Auto is among the most commercially successful entertainment franchises in history. Its cultural influence extends beyond gaming into music, fashion, online communities and popular conversation. Its soundtracks have become particularly recognisable parts of that wider appeal.

Afro Bank FM places African musical traditions alongside the Latin, rock, country and pop stations announced for the new game. Its presence reflects the increasing diversity of music competing for international attention.

For Burna Boy, whose career has included Grammy recognition and performances at major international venues, the collaboration adds another medium through which his music and cultural influence can travel.

More than a soundtrack

The appearance of African music in GTA VI matters partly because of the scale of the platform. But cultural influence is not measured solely by the number of people who encounter a song.

It also depends on the associations that audiences form. Music can introduce listeners to a language, an artistic movement or a cultural scene they might never otherwise have sought out.

Afro Bank FM reflects the growing place of African music in international entertainment. When Grand Theft Auto VI launches, it will bring those sounds into one of gaming's most recognisable fictional worlds.
